Let’s get rid of the plastic bags – go for shopping baskets!

Based on the ideas and prototypes from basket4life, 2 groups of women started  in 2004 weaving shopping baskets with nylon on metal frames. These materials give good stability, they are weatherproof and provide an endless variation of colours. The nylon is available in every African market.

First we had imagined using recycled materials, leather and natural materials, but had to realize that the quality of the baskets was too poor and the materials deteriorated.

After several years of quality control and improvement the result is a number of models designed and woven in constant development by the women involved.

The latest models are wastepaper baskets and bicycle baskets. The latter are constructed to fit a “Klickfix” a device that enables you to easily click  your basket on and off.

There are 50 women involved in the project. The baskets are sold locally in Village Artisanal, the most visited craft market in Ouagadougou.

Overseas the baskets are also sold in Denmark where you can find the at www.kuni.nu or more info from eva@seidenfaden.net.

The women also have a production of stars made from millet straw. These are easier to transport and creates an alternative article.

The women also here create new designs and the quality of the stars is outstanding.
